New EMRT 1.3 Released: What You Need to Know

The Extended Minerals Reporting Template (EMRT) is a free, standardized template created by the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) to ease the exchange of cobalt and mica supply chain information. The EMRT is the outcome of combining the Cobalt Reporting Template (CRT) with the Mica Reporting Template (MRT). It was created in compliance with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) Due Diligence Guidelines. Continue reading to discover more about the EMRT and get the most recent template version.

Purpose of EMRT?

  • Determining the mineral country of origin
  • Identifying utilized refiners and processors
  • Simplifying downstream suppliers’ surveys
  • Identifying and mitigating risk
  • Disclosing reporting results to upstream stakeholders

On April 26, 2024, the Responsible Minerals Initiative, RMI, released the newest version (v. 1.3) of the Extended Minerals Reporting Template, EMRT.

Why Cobalt & Mica Reporting/Problem?

Currently 50% of the cobalt produced is used in batteries. Mainly it is used in rechargeable batteries, so the demand for cobalt is high in consumer electronic devices production. Cobalt is largely producing in DR Congo region, so the risk for mining is high.

Mica is a group of 37 different minerals which are physically and chemically similar.  Mica is used in electronics, automobiles, paints and cosmetics.

Cobalt and Mica strongly associated with the child labour issues. These two are not yet considered as conflict minerals, but the risks as well as demand are high. So to ensure responsible sourcing and for the transparency in supply chain RMI developed the Extended Minerals Reporting Template (EMRT).

Currently there is no regulatory requirements for cobalt and mica. But as a good practice companies can post the completed EMRTs on their websites.

Solution:

  • EMRT assists in identifying smelters and addressing the issue of underage labour.
  • With increased demand for cobalt and mica, there are serious issues about where and how they are sourced. Cobalt and mica are mined in conflict-affected areas, contributing to unethical sourcing practices.in this case EMRT is particularly useful to identify the high-risk countries.

Key Features of the New EMRT 1.3

  • Bug and error corrections
  • Updates to highlight features on Smelter List tabs,
  • Revisions to the Smelter Reference List and Standard Smelter List, and the addition of a German translation to the file.
  • German Translation Added: In a move to broaden accessibility, a German translation has been incorporated into the files, catering to a wider user base.
